Community & Comment Rules

Our Purpose

The Learning Library is an educational resource intended to support students, parents, educators, and adult learners. Comments can add useful questions, explanations, examples, experiences, and perspectives to instructional content.

These guidelines help keep discussions useful, respectful, and appropriate for an educational environment. They apply to comments and other user-submitted content associated with Learning Library resources.

The goal is not to prevent disagreement or limit thoughtful discussion. The goal is to maintain a community where people can participate safely and where comments contribute to learning.

1. Expected Community Behavior

When participating in Learning Library discussions, please:

  • Keep comments meaningfully related to the instructional content, resource, or discussion.
  • Ask relevant questions, offer useful observations, share appropriate experiences, or contribute information that may help other learners.
  • Treat students, parents, educators, authors, contributors, and other community members with respect.
  • Disagree with ideas when appropriate, but do so constructively and without attacking the person presenting them.
  • Use a reasonably accurate and consistent identity when participating.
  • Consider that comments may be read by people of different ages, backgrounds, experiences, and levels of knowledge.
  • Help maintain a learning environment in which others can participate without unnecessary hostility, embarrassment, or disruption.

A comment does not need to agree with the instructional material to be useful. Questions, corrections, alternative perspectives, and constructive criticism are welcome when they are presented appropriately and remain relevant to the subject.

2. Keep Comments Relevant

Comments should have a meaningful connection to the page, resource, or discussion where they are posted.

Comments may be removed when they are primarily:

  • Unrelated to the instructional material or discussion.
  • Repeated across multiple pages.
  • Intended to attract attention to an unrelated website, product, service, or organization.
  • Designed primarily for search-engine optimization or obtaining links.
  • Promotional rather than educational.
  • Automated, generated, or posted in a manner that resembles spam.

A comment can be well-written or otherwise coherent and still be inappropriate for publication if its purpose, associated link, identity, or surrounding context is unsuitable for the Learning Library.

External links can sometimes make a useful contribution to an educational discussion. However, a link does not make an otherwise unrelated comment relevant.

External links may be removed when they are:

  • Unrelated to the discussion.
  • Primarily promotional or advertising-related.
  • Intended to improve search-engine rankings or generate traffic.
  • Misleading or presented in a deceptive manner.
  • Inappropriate for an educational audience.
  • Associated with content that does not meet these community guidelines.
  • Included in a comment whose overall context makes the link unsuitable.

The Learning Library may also remove the link while leaving a relevant portion of a comment intact when doing so preserves its educational value.

4. Appropriate Content

The Learning Library serves an educational audience that may include minor students. Comments should therefore maintain an appropriate educational standard.

Do not post content that is:

  • Sexual or sexually explicit.
  • Abusive, harassing, or intended to intimidate another person.
  • Threatening or encouraging violence.
  • Discriminatory or degrading toward individuals or groups.
  • Profane or otherwise inappropriate for the educational setting.
  • Deliberately humiliating, bullying, or hostile toward another learner or contributor.
  • Deceptive, malicious, or intended to cause harm.
  • Otherwise unsuitable for an educational community.

This does not prevent appropriate educational discussion of difficult, sensitive, or mature subjects when those subjects are relevant to the instructional material. Context matters, and such discussions should remain focused on the educational purpose of the resource.

5. Identity and Representation

Participants should not deliberately use a deceptive identity to mislead other community members.

Do not impersonate another person, educator, author, organization, or contributor. Do not present yourself as having an affiliation, qualification, or authority that you do not have when doing so could mislead others.

A user does not need to disclose unnecessary personal information in order to participate. The purpose of this guideline is to discourage deception, not to require people to share more about themselves than is appropriate.

6. Privacy and Personal Information

Do not post private, confidential, or personally identifying information about yourself or another person.

This includes information such as:

  • Home addresses or other precise location information.
  • Personal telephone numbers.
  • Private email addresses.
  • Account credentials or passwords.
  • Confidential educational, employment, or business information.
  • Personal information belonging to another individual without appropriate permission.

If a discussion requires sharing personal circumstances, provide only information that is necessary for the educational discussion and appropriate for a public or community setting.

Privacy-related practices, including how account information and other personal information are collected, used, stored, or handled by the site, should be addressed in the Learning Library’s Privacy Policy rather than in these comment guidelines.

Respect the rights of authors, artists, educators, publishers, software developers, and other creators.

Do not use comments to distribute copyrighted material when you do not have the right to do so. Do not post material represented as your own when it was created by someone else.

Short quotations or references may sometimes be useful in an educational discussion, but users should consider whether they have the appropriate rights to reproduce material and should identify sources when appropriate.

Questions concerning ownership, licensing, permissions, or other intellectual-property matters may be addressed through the Learning Library’s applicable Terms of Use or other site policies.

8. Moderation

The Learning Library may review comments to help maintain the educational quality and integrity of the community.

Depending on the circumstances, a comment may be:

  • Approved as submitted.
  • Edited for clarity, formatting, or safety when appropriate.
  • Have an external link removed.
  • Moved to a more appropriate discussion or resource when practical.
  • Rejected or removed.
  • Subject to additional review before publication.

Moderation is not intended to prevent legitimate questions, disagreement, criticism, or alternative viewpoints. Decisions are based on the relevance, appropriateness, context, and potential impact of submitted content within the Learning Library’s educational environment.

A comment that is otherwise coherent or well-written may still be rejected when its associated link, identity, purpose, or context is inappropriate.

9. Misuse of Commenting or Site Resources

The Learning Library may restrict a user’s ability to comment or take other appropriate account-level action when commenting or other site resources are repeatedly or seriously misused.

Examples may include:

  • Repeated spam or promotional posting.
  • Circumventing moderation measures.
  • Repeatedly submitting prohibited material.
  • Deliberately misleading other community members.
  • Using accounts to disrupt discussions or site resources.
  • Attempts to use the commenting system primarily for advertising, link building, or unrelated promotion.

Where appropriate, the Learning Library may address individual comments without taking action against an entire account. More serious or repeated misuse may warrant greater restrictions.

Account-related matters, membership conditions, access to restricted resources, and other consequences of misuse should ultimately be coordinated with the Learning Library’s Terms of Use and applicable membership policies.

10. A Simple Standard

Before posting a comment, consider three questions:

Is it relevant? Does it contribute meaningfully to the resource or discussion?

Is it appropriate? Would it be suitable for an educational community that may include students?

Is it respectful and useful? Does it help people learn, ask questions, understand another perspective, or participate constructively?

If the answer to these questions is generally yes, your comment is likely to be a useful contribution.

Our Moderation Approach

The Learning Library uses these guidelines to protect the educational purpose and integrity of the site while allowing room for genuine discussion.

Moderation decisions are made with consideration for the content, context, identity or presentation of the commenter, associated links, and the overall effect on the learning environment. The Learning Library may remove or restrict content when reasonably necessary to keep discussions relevant, appropriate, and useful.

These guidelines are intended to explain community expectations, not to replace the Learning Library’s formal policies. Matters concerning privacy, accounts, memberships, access to resources, intellectual-property rights, website use, or other formal obligations should be addressed in the applicable Privacy Policy, Terms of Use, Membership Policies, or other site policies as those documents are developed.

The Learning Library may update these guidelines as the community and its educational resources develop.
